This can be really useful to find out where frequencies are clashing between instruments. In the video demo above you can see how we can use SPAN to analyze the frequencies of two instruments at the same. This plugin helps me find those frequencies that are muddying and using up Headroom in my mix. This is especially the case if I’m using small speakers or headphones that can’t reproduce those low frequencies. I then check it on SPAN and sometimes I find there is still a lot of low-frequency information there. For example, if I’ve reduced the low frequencies in an EQ plugin to what I think is a good amount. I often use this plugin for checking my EQ settings. I find this plugin particularly useful for finding the prominent frequencies of a kick drum or bass guitar and see how you can get them to work around each other frequency wise. Apart from its use in electronic music, Junos are also widely used by Indie and Shoegaze musicians for the colourful character of their sound. The thick tonal sound and sharp envelopes make the Juno extremely diverse for almost any sound you can think of, especially pads, stabs, and basslines. This means your mix won’t sound distorted in the studio, but your peaks might become clipped when played through a cheap Hi-Fi.
The Juno offered artists access to rich, full soundscapes at a more reasonable price compared to some of the other famous polysynths of the time, such as the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, the Roland Jupiter-8, or the monstrous Yamaha CS-80. A high-end digital to analogue converter has headroom to compensate for this issue, but cheap speakers won’t be able to compensate for these inter-sample peaks. They range from workhorse tools like a compressor and EQ, to less common effects like a ring modulator, flanger, and oscilloscope.
